Randal M. Barnum
Mr. Barnum completed his undergraduate work with honors at Stanford University and graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1983. He then started his career as a litigation associate with the San Francisco-based firm of Bronson, Bronson, and McKinnon. He joined Bowles & Verna in Walnut Creek, where he became a partner in 1989. Mr. Barnum started the Law Offices of Randal M. Barnum in 1993.
Mr. Barnum has given speeches and lectured on various aspects of employment law for numerous organizations and companies, including the Council on Education in Management, chambers of commerce, various bar associations, arbitration and mediation organizations, insurance companies, and other business organizations. Mr. Barnum was provided the highest rating available for attorneys (AV- very high preeminent) by Martindale & Hubbell. Mr. Barnum is Board Certified as a Civil Trial Specialist and Pre-Trial Specialist and has been selected as a "Super Lawyer" in the field of employment law every year since 2008.
He has also published articles in the fields of litigation and employment law, including; "Winning the Battle and the War: Defending Against Motions for Attorney's Fees Under Section 1988 of Title 42" 52 Insurance Counsel Journal 320, April 1985 and "Sexual Harassment; Prevention and Remedies for a Difficult Problem," The Business Journal, Vol. 7, No.23, March 14, 1994.
In 1990, Mr. Barnum began serving as a mediator and Judge Pro Tem and devotes substantial time to these Alternative Dispute Resolution methods. Mr. Barnum has served as an arbitrator and mediator in over 200 cases
Mr. Barnum lives in Benicia, California, with his wife, Christine, and has two children, Stephanie and Jacqueline. He is very active in his community, having served as President of the Benicia Chamber of Commerce, on its Board of Directors, and as Chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee. Mr. Barnum has also served on the Benicia Civil Service Commission and on the Board of Directors of several non-profit organizations.
Jenna R. Avila
Jenna R. Avila is a Partner at the Law Offices of Barnum & Avila. She has enjoyed a long tenure with the firm and its predecessor, the Offices of Randal M. Barnum, for over 15 years. She graduated from California State University, Chico, where she received the Outstanding Human Resource Academic Award for the highest-grade point average in her major, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus in Human Resource Management.
Thereafter, Ms. Avila attended law school at John F. Kennedy University, receiving eight (8) Witkin Awards and graduating as Valedictorian, receiving her Juris Doctorate Degree in 2015.
Ms. Avila has devoted her entire practice to zealously protecting the rights of California employees and defending businesses in Solano County, Napa County, Sonoma County, Contra Costa County, Alameda County, and the greater Bay Area. Throughout her practice, Ms. Avila has successfully represented employees and defended employers in a wide range of employment-related matters, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination in violation of public policy, violations of the various medical, disability, and pregnancy leave and accommodation laws. Ms. Avila also has extensive experience litigating and defending wage and hour claims, including class action cases and claims brought before the California Labor Commissioner's Office.
Ms. Avila is licensed to practice law before all California State Courts and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Eastern Districts.
Ms. Avila takes great pride in her ability to serve the legal needs of the community of Benicia, where she was born and raised.
Carrie E. Croxall
Carrie E. Croxall is of counsel with The Law Offices of Barnum & Avila
Ms. Croxall joined the firm in 2011 and brought over 18 years of experience as an attorney. Before joining the firm, Ms. Croxall was an associate with McNamara, Ney, Beatty, Slattery, Borges & Ambacher, LLP, and Dunbar & Associates, where she gained substantial experience in all aspects of civil litigation.
Ms. Croxall graduated from Loyola Law School of Los Angeles in 1997. She is licensed to practice law before all California State Courts and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, and Central Districts. Ms. Croxall received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Baylor University and a Master of Science in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College.
Ms. Croxall's work with the firm is devoted to assisting clients in civil litigation of employment matters.
