Mediation and Arbitration Services

The Law Offices of Barnum & Avila provide mediation and arbitration services to businesses, litigants, parties, or individuals seeking to resolve disputes.

Dispute Resolution Experience:

In his forty years of practice since 1983, Mr. Barnum has arbitrated and mediated hundreds actions involving wrongful termination claims, federal and state discrimination, wrongful termination and wage and hour laws. These cases have also involved claims for sex discrimination and sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination, disability and medical condition discrimination, race discrimination, and age discrimination. 

In 1990, Mr. Barnum began serving as an arbitrator and Judge Pro Tem for the Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez, California. Since then, Mr. Barnum has served as an arbitrator and mediator on the Contra Costa County Bar Association-Alternative Dispute Resolution Panel and the Solano County Superior Court. Mr. Barnum also served as a mediator for the Center for Employment Dispute Resolution (CEDR) and the State of California, First District Court of Appeal.

He also has substantial experience serving as an arbitrator and mediator on personal injury, trust disputes, real estate, and a broad range of commercial litigation cases.

Other Experience:

In addition to his arbitration and mediation work, Mr. Barnum maintains an active litigation and counseling practice focusing on a broad range of employment law issues. Mr. Barnum has represented and served the employment needs of more than a thousand clients. He represents both employers and employees.

Mr. Barnum has given speeches and lectured on various aspects of employment law for numerous organizations and companies, including Bar Associations, the Council on Education in Management, Chambers of Commerce, insurance companies, and other business organizations. He published a widely read article, "Sexual Harassment; Prevention and Remedies for a Difficult Problem," The Business Journal, Vol. VII, No. 23, March 14, 1994.

Additional experience includes serving on the City of Benicia Civil Service Commission and as the President of the Benicia Chamber of Commerce, including serving as the Chairman of its legislative affairs committee. Mr. Barnum was formerly a partner in the Walnut Creek firm of Bowles and Verna and was head of its employment law department. Mr. Barnum is certified as a civil trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy recognized as a board certification by the California State Bar.
