Randal M. Barnum founded the firm in 1993 after ten years of experience as a trial lawyer, partner, and head of the employment law department at the Law Offices of Bowles and Verna in Walnut Creek, California. Jenna R. Avila joined the firm as a partner in 2023.

The firm's practice is primarily devoted to representing businesses and individuals in a broad range of employment law litigation and consultations. These include wrongful discharge actions, sexual harassment, discrimination, drug and alcohol issues, termination advice, severance issues, privacy issues, wage and hour disputes, unemployment compensation appeals, reduction in force, Americans with Disabilities Act, Equal Employment Opportunity Act, California Fair Employment and Housing Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, Skelly hearings, State Personnel Board appeals and military personnel matters before the United States Court of Federal Claims. The civil litigation experience of the firm also includes personal injury, trade secrets, commercial litigation, professional negligence, and appellate work.

As of 2023, The firm has successfully represented over 3,000 clients in numerous jury and court trials, administrative hearings, arbitrations, mediations, settlement conferences, contested court hearings, depositions, and consultations. Mr. Barnum has also argued cases before the California and United States Courts of Appeal. Although most of the firm's practice has been devoted to the defense of business clients, the firm also spends substantial time representing and advising employees, particularly in employment and personal injury cases, providing the firm with a unique and balanced perspective to evaluate claims properly.

In addition to an extensive litigation background, the firm has provided consulting services to businesses and individuals regarding a broad range of employment and labor law matters, including employment contracts, personnel policies and procedures, employee handbooks, severance, termination, and statutory compliance issues.
